In 2008, Compact Flash Association introduced CFast in response to market requests for a Serial ATA based solution for industrial/embedded chip-sets that were migrating to the Serial ATA interface.

In the last five years, broadcast class professional video cameras have started the transition from tape and optical media to solid state media. Increasingly professional DSLR cameras have also added high quality high definition video recording capabilities. Due to the rugged and durable format of Compact Flash coupled with industry leading performance, many video capable cameras now use Compact Flash as the recording media. To meet the requirements for the professional video market, Compact Flash Association responded with a feature set for a layered performance control framework. Video Performance Guarantee (VPG) is the highest layer of the performance control framework that enables reliable video recordings.
